Speakers distorting when subs start bumpin'?

I have '00 maxima with bose system and aftermarket subs. When I turn up the volume and the subs start goin' the mids and highs get very distorted and fuzzy. Is the problem the speakers? I have already purchased aftermarket ones. or is it amplification
