We are not homophobic but need honest answers from gay men and others...?
My son goes to college where I work. He is a freshman and unfortunately, in my position, his tuition is not free like the kids of some of my coworkers. To help out, he thought he would apply to be an RA. He was accepted and gets free room, board (dining), and a paycheck on top of that next year, which REALLY helps us out. My son said that some preliminary meetings have started in advance of next Sept. for the newly chosen RAs. We are not homophobic...we both have friends who are gay and who we really like. He, however, seems bothered by something. He said that almost all of the new male RAs he has met are gay and his new residence hall director (an adult where this is a real job...he gets an apartment in the building and supervises the RAs, usually they are grad students) seems to be hitting on him as well ALREADY. My son loves brunette women, has dark hair, a beard, etc. but he is confused as to whether he has entered a situation that he may have been unaware about (this is really stupid of me...I am educated but can I please ask this question without anyone hating me?)...why would this be so? Many of the new male RAs are gay and his residence hall director is touchy feely (touching his shoulder even though he just met him and he is an adult man) even when he has only met him with a group that toured their residence hall for next September. My son's generation is very accepting of lifestyles other than their own but he seems geniunely concerned about whether he will be perceived as gay just because the other RAs seem to be and he is worried about this adult male who already seems too friendly. What should he do and is this a secret type of job/interest (being an RA) for gay guys? SORRY. Please don't be mad at me. My son is straight as could be. What is going on here? PLEASE no mean answers. We are truly confused about this situation. It is NOT a school that is known to have a large gay population (like Smith for women, etc.)
